Clouds and Mist..... Combat = clouds and mist on a winters day, causing the hunter to squint and look again............
There are no primary or "simple" attacks in true knife play. Everything is deception. Every move has the potential to kill or ...... is it a lie instead ? Commit to defending against a false attack and you might get carved from some obscure zone you never anticipated. Tricking an opponent can occur in many ways. By use of the environment, through sensory irradiations, via the bodies natural "blind spots" and many more ways to numerous to mention. Lets yak about those BLIND SPOTS for a minute and how they link into being a successful player of the knife...........................
OK, I'll keep this short & sweet as has become my preference of late. Too often rocket science is made of things that are in reality grammar school level. This has happened in the knife world unfortunately as in most of the martial arts. I won't play that. You are not a dumb-ass, I refuse to treat you as one. I trust in "savvy" and rapid understanding. (Hugin & Mugin too)
Honestly, deception is one of the great "keys" to victory. To learn & grasp the tru-essence of deceiving others I ask those individuals who are serious about knife play to study basic stage magic. Therein hides the roots of the physical lie & the foundations of rapid, close quarter deception. True intent coupled with deception gives your "frauds" (masterplays) believe-ability. And thats a factor which makes the adversary take the bait ... (IE: fall for your trick).
I reckon I could ramble on about tricking others instead of whooping them outight, but as I said, letz talk of a specific aspect of BLIND SPOTS and where they fit into the fight. While not a "trick" proper, they fit within the general outline of such things.
1. Between the eyes
2. 45 degrees above and off the brow
3. Far side periphial gap
4. Low attacks when they have a frontal guard
5. Directly below the chin (surface contact)
A Nod is as good as a wink to a blind horse, a grain of sand can hide an army............

DECEPTIONS

Directly betwixt the eyes lies the hidden blindspot. Yes, right before your very eyes ! It's simply a marvelous bit of knowledge to possess ! It allows for "Invisible Striking".... IE: The opposition never see's the blow which fells them.... it is a "felt" experience over a being a "seen"
type of experience. The thrust is @ it's apex of application in this instance. Combined w/ proper timing and distance control, it is downright lethal !
# 2.
The next blindspot we can exploit is the one located just above the head and slightly to the side (@ a 45 degree angle) The infamous backcut that Comtech has championed for so long often travels this particular route of attack. Like a Stuka dive-bomber coming out of the sun, a knife descending from this angle is first "sensed" and then felt by the opposition ....... and as before .... such a blow is rarely seen !
# 3.
The far side vision gap.... Best done in combination w/ distraction.
Like magic, distraction allows you a momentary control of the eyes and their mind... (and it will be momentary)! A trick to induce the central vision to take over--dominate, limiting peripheal vision or eliminating it all together. When that happens attack in the manner of a wide flank-sweep. Hook'em w/ contracting, short arc rips.
# 4.
The frontal guard blind spot is something that you can watch for .... when the adversary takes a frontal guard (hands held high..center line oriented) he creates a blind spot directly below his arms (guard). At this instant he is blind to his lower regions. Use kicks or upward lines to exploit this. Timing is crucial. This works, be daring, try it sometime.
Dr. John LaTourette expounded upon blindspot-trick in one of his books on combat /knives.

Ahhh, this'un is somewhat limited. It is a surface contact technique. Kenpo calls this type of motion "contouring", because it travels the contours of the enemies body as it seeks it's target. Angling in from the south pole comes yer attack.... (upward from below).... Any engagement in close quarters can allow access to this ruse. Touch or don't ... but git close and sneak upward, they won't see it. This blow causes the head to snap back. Staying close is a key, before-during-after ... close is best !
Out of all these tricks, this one will be the hardest to pull off. I see it's logic, but I loathe to go there. blah, blah blah... ok, enuff 4 now !

Risk Management through higher conciousness
Using your new found knowledge of the bodies blindspots you will find it easy to strike an adversary ! You must exercise these tricks in sparring matches, you must make them yours through may hours of experimentation and observance of results. I share my knowledge for the betterment of the many. Subtle tricks of deadly consequence are a gentlemans mainstay. Especially in places where the veneer of civilization has waxed weak. Dependent not upon youth or vigor, but instead upon knowledge and sleight of hand... here be the true way O' Scholar. Strike and live, strike w/ confidence and watch their eyes, watch their eyes..
